1. Rye grain is used to make certain types of bread (Ukrainian bread contains 20-80% rye flour), beer, whiskey, vodka and other products, and sometimes whole grain cooked in the form of porridge is also consumed.
2. This cereal is unsurpassed in terms of cold and frost resistance, more resistant to drought among cereal crops, and unpretentious to soil.
3. Rye bread has high taste and is not inferior to wheat bread in many respects. Consumption of rye bread helps to eliminate heavy metal salts from the body, prevents the development of dental caries, heart disease, and a decoction of rye bran is used for respiratory diseases. It is an indispensable dietary product for overweight people and people with diabetes mellitus.
4. Winter rye is of great value as a fodder plant, providing the first early high-quality green fodder. The green mass of rye is successfully used for the preparation of hay meal and early silage, haylage and hay.
5. Winter rye is the second most important crop in our country after wheat. Its nutritional value is determined by the high content of complete proteins (12.8%) and carbohydrates (69.1%), very important vitamins (A, B1, B2, B3, B6, PP, C), high caloric content (1 kg of rye bread provides a person with 2481.2 kcal), and the presence of unsaturated fatty acids that can dissolve cholesterol in the human circulatory system.
6. As a crop, winter rye originated in Iran, Turkey, and the Transcaucasus. In the CIS, winter rye was first grown in Ukraine in the second and first millennia BC.
